Paolo Roversi has been one of my favourite fashion photographers for years, ever since I saw his work for Alberta Ferretti in the 90s. His signature style is ethereal and otherworldly, using combinations of high contrast, shallow depth of field, saturated colour, and interesting post-production effects. While he is well known and often called on to photograph famous models, he finds a way to tone down mainstream “prettiness”, rather accentuating the strangeness in the women he uses for his shoots. Stern, and sometimes disturbing expressions are his stock-in-trade. I find his photographs carry an undercurrent of insanity - a sort of Victorian hysteria. While his sets and concepts are simple, his photos can be surprisingly complex and layered.
The only complaint I have is that Roversi seems to have embraced his chosen style so completely that it is rare to find any photos that stray from his formula - which can make some of them a bit predictable.

They’re both adorable and have simple but appealing outfits. I love the colours in this, too.

For me, kitsch is super visual. Some people have asked me if there is kitsch music, kitsch poliitcs, and for me that’s really hard to answer. It exists, I’m sure, but as a concept kitsch is very visual. There’s definitely kitsch fashion, but I think there’s a big difference between just retro and kitsch. I think kistch is of the retro family, though.
Roxanne Arsenault, Questions for Dresses, WORN Fashion Journal #6

Although I sympathize with the loss of attention to detail, quality, and workmanship that these pieces represent, there is a part of me that feels uneasy bemoaning the loss of a culture where one’s dominant social status needed to be shown off and reinforced right down to the buttons on one’s clothes. That’s what makes Archangel’s buttons so unique - they are separated from their garments, and their original social significance too. The history is writ into the objects, yet they can be applied freely and imaginatively by new owners.
