Strictly inspiration and apropos of nothing:A detail from an Avedon shoot. In terms of makeup, this is in my top five. Simple, wearable (yes, I have worn this to the office), and filled with understated punk-rock edge.

An advertisement photo for the 1955 Dodge La Femme. The pink model was developed “by appointment to her Majesty, the American Woman” (so reads the ad copy). The raincoat the models wears came as a standard feature with every car, along with an umbrella, both printed with the same tiny rosettes that covered the seat upholstery. The back of the driver’s seat boasted an “emergency compartment” complete with mirror and makeup kit.
I am sorry to report that the La Femme didn’t sell very well and was almost immediately discontinued.

A little vintage Linda, shot by Arthur Elgort.I became aware of Ms. Evangelista in highschool. She was the first model whose name I remembered. I thought she had the strongest, most elegant face I’d ever seen.As is clearly illustrated in this photo… Ha.x.g.

Paolo Roversi has been one of my favourite fashion photographers for years, ever since I saw his work for Alberta Ferretti in the 90s. His signature style is ethereal and otherworldly, using combinations of high contrast, shallow depth of field, saturated colour, and interesting post-production effects. While he is well known and often called on to photograph famous models, he finds a way to tone down mainstream “prettiness”, rather accentuating the strangeness in the women he uses for his shoots. Stern, and sometimes disturbing expressions are his stock-in-trade. I find his photographs carry an undercurrent of insanity - a sort of Victorian hysteria. While his sets and concepts are simple, his photos can be surprisingly complex and layered.
The only complaint I have is that Roversi seems to have embraced his chosen style so completely that it is rare to find any photos that stray from his formula - which can make some of them a bit predictable.
